The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Could Change Driving Forever

How the Cross Sport Was Born

American drivers appreciate the height, stability, and spacious interiors provided by SUVs. However, more and more drivers recognize that a smaller vehicle may be better suited for their lifestyle and fuel budget. Pablo Di Si, president and CEO of Volkswagen of America, explained the importance of the Atlas and the Atlas Cross Sport in conjunction with the unveiling of the newest models, stating, “The Atlas was the first modern Volkswagen designed, engineered, and produced specifically for American buyers, and since its debut, it has become a major player in the US market.”

While the Atlas is a massive seven-passenger SUV designed to help drivers navigate family, carpool commutes, and adventure equally, the Atlas Cross Sport provides comfortable transportation for up to five passengers. The 2024 Atlas Cross Sport leans further into the “sporty” category with a leaner, more aerodynamic exterior and bold stature. Though the term “coupe” brings to mind tiny two-door models, rest assured the Atlas Cross Sport has four full-sized doors for its passengers.

Though it may be smaller overall, the Cross Sport provides an impressive amount of interior space for passengers and cargo alike. Inside, passengers can spread out across 111.8 cu.ft. of passenger space while enjoying 40.3 cu.ft. of cargo space. Drivers who require more cargo space can fold the rear seat down to create a whopping 77.8 cu.ft. for luggage, equipment, projects, and other treasures.

Power & Performance

Initially hitting American roads in 2020, the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport has come with several peppy powerhouse options. For 2023, that included a standard 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that supplied an ample 235 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. For 2024, the Cross Sport comes equipped with a 2.0L four-cylinder turbocharged TSI engine that provides an even sportier 269 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission specially tuned to provide a smoother transition between gears for a more responsive, comfortable drive.

Volkswagen engineers indicate that the 2024 model will provide not just more power but better fuel economy than previous models. While exact figures have not yet been released, the 2023 Atlas Cross Sport provided 24-25 MPG on the highway, which is already generous for an SUV of its size and power. The Atlas Cross Sport towing maximum remains at 5,000 lbs, allowing drivers to add extra carrying capacity when enjoying long vacations and exciting adventures.

Additionally, drivers may select from standard front-wheel drive or opt into the Volkswagen 4Motion all-wheel drive system. 4Motion provides four different drive modes that help provide the right level of torque and power to all four wheels. This includes Snow Mode, On-Road Mode, Off-Road Mode, and Off-Road Custom Mode, which allows drivers to select their own settings.

Fantastic New Features

While more details are soon to be shared on each 2024 Atlas Cross Sport trim and features, Volkswagen has already shared a few highlights across the lineup. Each Atlas Cross Sport will include the IQ.Drive suite of driver assistance technology as standard; this package offers semi-automatic features that help mitigate collisions on the road, including lane centering and a capacitive steering wheel. IQ.Drive also includes alerts and warnings based on sensors positioned around the vehicle.

Other standard features across the lineup include a 12.0-inch floating touchscreen infotainment display and a 10.25-inch configurable digital instrument cluster, known as Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro. A heated steering wheel is also standard. Volkswagen continues its commitment to driver comfort with automatic climate control for front and rear passengers and standard ventilated seating in the front. Wireless App-Connect and wireless charging are reportedly standard across the lineup, along with a choice of six or eight USB-C ports, including a 45-watt fast charging capability.

Even the base model is well-equipped with standard features that only appear on other models’ premier trims. Drivers who agree that “more is more” can peruse the Atlas Cross Sport’s higher-level trims and the compelling array of available features, which have also been upgraded for the 2024 model year. Ambient lighting features with 30 color choices and backlighting allows drivers to set the mood, while quilted leather seats provide extra comfort for long drives and heated rear seats extend the driver’s comfort to all other passengers. Drivers may also opt for advanced technology such as a heads-up display (HUD) and Adaptive Cruise Control, which aids in steering by predicting your travel route based on sensor readings of the roadway and nearby vehicles.

What to Expect From the Atlas Cross Sport

We don’t have long to wait before the newest Atlas Cross Sport is available at your Volkswagen dealership—but in the meantime, drivers are intrigued and excited by the photos and details that have been shared thus far. Given the attention to detail in the exterior and interior, it is anticipated that the 2024 Atlas Cross Sport will be offered in versions that will provide a variety of drivers with that “just right” on-road experience.
