The Future of Volkswagen EVs

People have always had fascinating ideas about where the automotive industry is heading. Back in the 1950s, it was a common belief that we would have flying cars by the 2020s. While this didn’t exactly pan out, manufacturers have been shifting their business models towards a greener future, and the most monumental leap thus far has been the electric vehicle. Many different manufacturers have hinted at a future of fully-electric powertrains, and some of them have already begun releasing production EV models. Volkswagen is one of the most notable examples, and the all-new ID.4 Electric SUV is already available here at your local VW dealer.

Currently, Volkswagen offers one EV in its American lineup, with another vehicle still in its conceptual phase slated for release down the line. The model that you can currently invest in is the 2021 ID.4 Electric Vehicle, which starts at an MSRP of $39,995. The ID.4 Electric Vehicle is slated to be available with a few different trims that allow for customization. The base model is known as the Pro, and it is remarkably well-equipped for a starting trim. Meanwhile, the limited production 1st Edition has an exclusively designed exterior with accompanying badging. But we recommend the Pro S Statement. With this trim, every seat will be leatherette instead of cloth, you will enjoy an expansive panoramic glass roof, and there will be a larger 12-inch infotainment display.

Incredible Performance

When the 2021 ID.4 Electric Vehicle launches, there will be only one powertrain configuration for the vehicle, but Volkswagen has confirmed an all-wheel drive option will be reaching VW dealers at a later date. However, even the current rear-wheel drive powertrain has plenty of range and power. That is partially because the battery inside of the 2021 ID.4 Electric Vehicle is substantially larger than its competitor’s offerings, with an 82-kWh capacity as opposed to the 66-kWh battery found in the latest Chevy Bolt EV or the 62-kWh battery in the current Nissan LEAF.

This 82-kWh battery, when combined with the electric motor, produces 201 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque, which should more than satisfy most drivers. In fact, that is noticeably more powerful than many gasoline-powered SUVs in this segment. As mentioned, efficiency is the main selling point of any electric vehicle, and the ID.4 Electric Vehicle can travel up an estimated 250-miles on a single charge. Even better, it can be conveniently recharged at home overnight, allowing you to always start the day with that estimated 250 miles of range. If you need to top off at a public charging station, the battery can also regain an estimated 60 miles of range after only 10 minutes of being plugged into a DC fast charger.

While the standard powertrain configuration for the 2021 ID.4 Electric Vehicle combines a single motor with its 82-kWh battery, the soon-to-be-released all-wheel drive powertrain option will add a second motor to the mix. The range of the upgraded all-wheel drive powertrain will be slightly lower, but the increase to 302 hp more than outweighs that. Powering the front wheel will also help out in wet or snowy weather, making the ID.4 Electric Vehicle an even more capable SUV and putting it into a relatively small number of all-wheel drive EV models. It will even allow the vehicle to tow up to 2,700 pounds – a rarity for an EV.

A Welcoming Interior

Volkswagen vehicles are commonly recognized for their interiors, and the 2021 ID.4 Electric Vehicle is simply no exception. Providing some of the most noteworthy tech-centric features and offering an array of customizability across its various packages, the 2021 ID.4 Electric Vehicle is a vehicle that you’ll enjoy spending extended road trips in. The ID.4 Electric Vehicle seats five passengers in comfort with an exceptional 41.1-inches of legroom in the front row and 37.6-inches of legroom in the back. Overall, it offers 99.9 cu ft of passenger volume, making it perfect for families and road trips.

Often when a relatively compact vehicle boasts such a massive amount of available passenger space, it’s because it sacrifices cargo space. Fortunately, this won’t be a problem for any owner of the ID.4 Electric Vehicle as you’ll still have an impressive 30.3 cu ft. of available cargo space at your disposal behind the third row. When the time comes to fold the seats down to maximize your cargo space, this space will more than double at 64.2 cu ft. As we mentioned earlier, the standard arrangement is cloth seating, but opting for the Pro S or 1st Edition will replace this with a much more aesthetically-pleasing leatherette.

Charging your smartphone when inside of your ID.4 Electric Vehicle can be done wirelessly with an accompanying charging pad, and you’ll also have the ability to use wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both of these can be found with the infotainment center, which features a massive 10-inch screen standard. Undoubtedly, a screen this size is more than enough for the average driver, especially one who is coming from a vehicle that contains either a smaller infotainment center or none at all. However, the 10-inch screen inside of the ID.4 Electric Vehicle can be upgraded to an even larger 12-inch screen.

As mentioned, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto both come included and are available to use with no cable required. Once you’ve successfully set up either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you can conveniently access important features of your phone while on the road. This means that you can make or answer phone calls, send text messages, and even ask your virtual assistant, such as Siri, for accurate turn-by-turn directions. Both pieces of software are highly intuitive, and the interface mimics the appearance of your smartphone, meaning you’ll feel right at home. The possibilities of an infotainment center are seemingly endless when combined with the versatility of your average smartphone.
