  • Overview

While many car companies these days have abandoned drivers looking for a great sedan, Volkswagen is not one of them, and they have numerous four-door offerings available. Among them, the 2023 Volkswagen Jetta is one of our favorites thanks to its sleek design, impressive and sporty performance, and fantastic features inside and out. This compact sedan provides you with plenty of space inside to enjoy with comfortable seating and a large trunk, but it is also perfect for city driving thanks to its small overall stature. You won't struggle to find a parking space for the Jetta, and on top of that, it has some of the most generous fuel economy available.

The heart of the Jetta is its 1.5L four-cylinder engine that makes it a lot of fun to drive, with front-wheel drive (FWD) that is perfect for getting around the Seattle area. One of the things we love most about this model is that it comes with a manual transmission, something that feels impossible to find these days, though an automatic is available if you prefer a less demanding driving experience. Best of all, the Jetta gets an EPA-estimated 34 MPG of combined fuel efficiency with its standard manual transmission, so you can stay on the road longer without stopping for gas.[a] Whether you mostly drive in the city, have a lot of errands to run nearby, or have a daily commute that takes you all over, the Jetta is perfect for your journeys.

In addition to this fun and sporty performance, the Jetta is also an incredibly safe vehicle, which is one of the most important things to us. You get fantastic standard safety features, including a rear view camera system and an Intelligent Crash Response System. Available safety features take things to the next level thanks to Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE package that includes adaptive cruise control, emergency assist, and much more. Plus, you get the Digital Cockpit standard on every model, which includes great technology to make your driving experience as simple and intuitive as possible.

  • Performance

A grey 2023 Volkswagen Jetta is shown from the front driving on a city street.

An engine with massive horsepower and incredible performance probably is not your top priority when looking at something like a compact sedan, but you still deserve to have a fun driving experience. One of the things we love about the VW Jetta is that it has a single engine available, so you do not have to worry about choosing a particular trim or paying more to get a good time on the road. The one engine it has is plenty with impressive performance and two different transmission options, so you can get exactly the driving experience you prefer.

    The Turbocharged 1.5L I-4 Engine

The Volkswagen Jetta features a 1.5L four-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers 158 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. While this is not about to set any land-speed records, it is plenty of power for such a smooth and nimble little ride, especially with all that torque propelling it; if you want more power, you should check out the VW Jetta GLI. You get FWD with the Jetta, which is perfect for a car like this and makes it great for handling the weather here in Washington; since the weight of the engine is on top of the wheels with power, you get excellent traction even on slippery conditions. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the Jetta, which has become difficult to find, but an eight-speed automatic is available if you prefer it.

    Fuel Economy

What is truly impressive about the Jetta is how incredibly efficient it is and how well it can help you keep your gas costs low. A model with the standard manual transmission gets an EPA-estimated 29 MPG in the city, 42 MPG on the highway, and 34 MPG of combined fuel economy.[a] Choosing an automatic transmission pushes city efficiency up to an EPA-estimated 31 MPG, with 41 MPG on the highway and 35 MPG of combined fuel economy.[c] This is perfect if you spend a lot of time on the I-5 or 405 getting around Seattle, though both options are also very efficient for a day spent in the city.

  • Safety

When shopping for your next vehicle, nothing is as important as choosing a car that will help protect you and your loved ones while you are on the road. Modern safety features go well beyond simple things like seat belts and airbags, offering impressive technology designed to help you avoid a crash. This is one of the reasons we love the Jetta: its combination of standard and available safety features makes it one of the safest and most impressive cars on the market. The IQ.DRIVE suite of advanced tech options, in particular, is something you want to take advantage of.

    Standard Safety Features

Standard safety features on the Jetta, even on the starting S trim, include what you would expect, along with some impressive technology that might surprise you. The Jetta includes a comprehensive airbag package, LED headlights, and taillights that help illuminate the road and ensure you can always see what is around you. Advanced safety features like an Intelligent Crash Response System and Automatic Post-Collision Braking System are also standard. You also get a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert as standard on all models, which can help you avoid someone hiding in your blind spot or passing behind you while you are in reverse.

The available IQ.DRIVE package of safety features, which comes standard on some higher trims, includes a wide range of fantastic advanced technologies. This includes adaptive cruise control, which lets you set a speed and adjust to maintain a safe distance from other traffic, plus front assist and a lane assist system to help you avoid drifting from your lane. You also get an emergency assist system in this package, which can help bring your vehicle to a stop in case of an emergency where you lose the ability to drive or after a collision. All of this comes together to make the Jetta one of the safest vehicles on the road, designed to protect you and other drivers.

  • Technology

A great vehicle should provide you with more than a good driving experience – it should make driving enjoyable and easier. This is especially important if you have a lengthy daily commute and you are going to spend a fair amount of time each day inside your vehicle. The Volkswagen Jetta is not only a lot of fun to drive, but the impressive technology you can get in it makes your drive much more relaxing and fun. Some of this will depend on the trim level you choose, but there are plenty of fantastic features even on the standard model.

    Standard Tech

Looking at the starting S trim for the Jetta, you get comfortable cloth seating with standard air conditioning, cruise control, and a multi-function steering wheel all standard. A 6.5-inch infotainment display is standard in the Jetta, with smartphone integration, USB input, and Bluetooth technology for audio streaming. Perhaps best of all, the Jetta comes with the impressive Digital Cockpit technology standard in every model, which includes an 8-inch digital instrument display to provide you with important information on the road.

    Available Tech on Other Trims

If you go with a higher trim like the SEL, things become even more impressive, starting with Air Care Climatronic two-zone automatic climate control, ambient interior lighting, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. You get heated front and rear seats, leather seating, and a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel with touch controls. The SEL has an 8-inch infotainment display, a premium BeatsAudio sound system, and keyless access with push-button start. You also get remote engine start functionality, a wireless charging pad, and an advanced Digital Cockpit display with a configurable 10.25-inch instrument screen for improved functionality that lets you customize your driving experience.
