  • Overview

For far too long, impressive Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) have primarily been available to the wealthiest drivers, making them a luxury beyond most of us. Volkswagen has always been about making great vehicles for every driver, and the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle is an exceptional example of that: a BEV with fantastic performance and great features, starting at an accessible price. While the ID.4 has been available for a couple of years now, the 2023 model is more practical and approachable than ever, thanks to the new Standard trim and an affordable starting price.

The addition of the Standard trim for the 2023 model is more than simply a new name; it means more ID.4 models are available for a wider range of drivers. This Standard model comes with a 62 kWh battery that provides a lower total range than other ID.4 models, at an estimated 208 miles, but this is still plenty for a wide range of drivers. With so many chargers across the country these days, and many more being built in the coming years, 208 miles of range is plenty to get you where you need to go with power and performance you can rely on. Plus, if you need greater range, then the Pro trim levels come with a more-powerful 82 kWh battery for improved power and up to 275 miles of estimated range.

Any model of the ID.4 you go with is easy to charge at home or on the road, though the powerful 82 kWh models can charge a bit faster. The ID.4 comes with a standard rear-wheel drive (RWD), but if you really want an exhilarating driving experience, consider a model with the available all-wheel drive (AWD) system for greater performance and remarkable precision. Inside the 2023 VW ID.4, you will find a comfortable and luxurious interior that features advanced technology, including a standard 12-inch infotainment display, wireless charging functionality, and the ID.Light system that relays information to you through illuminated cues. Combine that with standard IQ.DRIVE advanced driver assistance technology, and you have a remarkably affordable and safe all-electric crossover.

  • Performance

Although exhilarating performance might not be your top concern when looking for a crossover SUV, you deserve to have a vehicle that is fun to drive. One of the major selling points for BEV models like the Volkswagen ID.4 is that their electric design and architecture make them surprisingly powerful and sporty. The ID.4 is no exception to this, and you have a couple of different options available to you so you can get exactly the right amount of power for what you need in a vehicle, whether you are just looking to get around town or go on regular road trips.

    Rear-Wheel Drive

You have two options available to you in terms of the battery, but that impacts range and charging more than actual power and performance. If performance is important to you, consider whether you want one of the standard RWD models or if an AWD option would better meet your needs. Standard RWD models come with a single motor on the rear axle, as you would expect, and they get 201 hp for a sporty and very fun driving experience. Even with a single motor, you get instant torque that is incredibly rewarding when you press the pedal, and it makes this crossover model handle beautifully.

    All-Wheel Drive

If you want greater power and performance, however, you can choose an AWD model with a pair of motors, one on each axle, producing an impressive 295 hp. This greatly boosts the kind of driving experience you get with the ID.4; any model is fun to drive, but there is no denying the heart-pounding feel of that much power rocketing you forward. Best of all, you can choose an AWD version of most of the trims available on the ID.4 to get the kind of power you want, along with the features and options you are looking for.

  • Battery Range

One of the biggest concerns many people have when considering switching to a BEV model like the ID.4 is the range it can offer. While this was an understandable worry in the past, now that charging stations have become so common, with many more on the way soon, there is no need to worry about the range on a BEV. What is most important now is having great, affordable options that still deliver impressive electric range so you can get where you need to go and charge your vehicle on your time. That is exactly what the ID.4 delivers, and you have more options than ever with the 2023 model to get just what you need.

    The 62 kWh Battery

Arguably the most exciting update for the 2023 ID.4 is the addition of a new battery option available on the new Standard trim level. This creates a version of the ID.4 at an affordable price point, so it is a better option than ever for a wide range of drivers. You still get the same fantastic performance compared to other RWD models with the bigger battery. The new Standard trim features a 62 kWh battery that gives it an EPA-estimated range of 208 miles from a full charge.[a] It is worth noting, however, that this is only an early estimate, and an official estimate has not yet been released, though it will likely be close to this.

    The 82 kWh Battery

If you choose one of the Pro trims for the ID.4, on the other hand, then you get an 82 kWh battery that offers a superior range. Depending on the model you go with and the configuration, an ID.4 with this battery can go up to an EPA-estimated 275 miles from a full charge, making a long commute a bit easier without needing to charge it often.[a] That being said, the Standard model range is absolutely perfect for most drivers, so it really comes down to what works best for you. Since every ID.4 model supports different Levels of charging options, it's easy to keep your vehicle charged at home, at work, and on the go at a public charging station.

  • Interior

You would expect an impressive new BEV model like the 2023 ID.4 to have all sorts of innovative and sophisticated features, and you would be right. Even if you go for the starting Standard trim, you still get fantastic features, including a 12-inch infotainment display. In addition to this, every ID.4 model comes with the unique ID.Light feature: an intuitive light bar that runs across the front dashboard and uses glowing visual and acoustic cues to provide information about incoming calls, safety warnings, and more.

    Connectivity

Every model comes with wireless charging and connectivity with compatible apps and devices, including the Standard trim. You also get heated front seats and a comfortable interior in every model. Higher trims boost interior features to include a panoramic fixed glass roof with an electric sunshade, 12-way power-adjustable front seats with massage lumbar and position memory, and perforated leatherette seating for extra comfort. You can also get a hands-free power liftgate and three-zone automatic climate control.

    Driver Assistance

Perhaps best of all, every 2023 ID.4 comes with the Volkswagen IQ.DRIVE package of driver assistance technology. This includes features like adaptive cruise control, an active blind spot monitor, and a rear traffic alert. You also get a front and emergency assist feature to help you avoid a collision or stop the vehicle completely in case of an emergency. On top of that, it's equipped with a lane assist system to warn you if you start to drift from your lane. Volkswagen has packed this model full of innovative technology to keep you comfortable, make your drive more fun, and ensure you get home safely.
