  • Performance

When you hear the term “sport utility vehicle,” you probably imagine a vehicle ready to go anywhere and take on any challenge. Unfortunately for some, their SUV falls short, making them wonder where the "sport" and "utility" are in their vehicle. Thankfully, the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport not only delivers, but it is also first to the finish line. Plus, with its wide range of trims, there is something for everybody; after all, variety is the spice of life. That's why we are thrilled that the 2023 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport offers five trims to fit anybody's budget and lifestyle.

    Engine Power at Its Finest

Turbocharged and SUV should be synonymous, much like Volkswagen and performance. That's why the 2023 Atlas Cross Sport SE, SE With Technology, SEL, and SEL R-Line Black all come standard with a robust 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, producing an impressive 235 hp. Add in its 258 lb-ft. of torque, and even the base trim has enough power to make you weak in the knees, and at only $34,460 for the SE, the Atlas is the perfect family SUV.[a] If you require a little more muscle, then the 2023 Atlas Cross Sport SEL Premium R-Line is the trim for you, equipped with a standard 3.6L V6 engine. Wielding 276 hp and a bump to 266 lb-ft. of torque, the V6 will give you more bang for your buck at a starting price of $51,625.[a]

    4MOTION With Active Control

It's important to remember, though, that the Atlas is more than just brawn; it's also brains. All three SEL trims feature intelligent 4MOTION with Active Control. Using smart software while in "On Road" mode, the Atlas can detect wheel slip before it even happens, ensuring the front wheels never unintentionally lose traction. If a single wheel begins to slip, the system uses electronic stability control to divert power to the opposite wheel to increase traction.

4MOTION isn't just for safety. With the "Snow" mode, sensors combined with the smart software use transmission shifting to regulate the power being produced from the motor to increase traction in specific situations, such as cornering. The "Off-Road" mode works in a similar fashion to the "Snow" mode, except that it employs Tiptronic manual transmission control, which manipulates wheel spin and the ABS system to improve traction and stopping distance on soft road conditions.

  • Interior

Boxes are shown being loaded in the trunk of a 2023 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.

Have you heard the saying, "It's what's on the inside that counts?" Well, the interior of the Atlas Cross Sport is worth counting. Seat five or fold the 60/40 split rear seat to get an impressive 77.8 cu.ft. of cargo space across all trims. That's a lot of room, and with several 12V outlets sprinkled throughout the vehicle, the sky's the limit of how you use it. Did someone say tailgating? With an optional customizable interior, you can choose subtlety or bravado. Choose a two-tone interior with accents on the seats and the doors, or choose nuance with dark beige and titan black or go dramatic with dark Burgundy and black. No matter what you choose, choose to make it all you.

    Inside the SE Trims

The base trim of the 2023 Atlas Cross Sport comes loaded with V-Tex leatherette seats, heated front seats, and an 8-way power adjustable driver seat with lumbar. The next trim up, the SE with Technology, has all that the SE does, as well as an additional 115V AC outlet in the 2nd row and Climatronic dual-zone automatic climate control for added comfort for both driver and passenger. With dual-zone climate control, there is no more fighting over the temperature, meaning a more pleasant ride for everyone on board.

    Experience The SEL Trims

The SEL and SEL R-Line Black go a step further with ambient interior lighting and driver-side front seat memory. Seat memory takes the hassle out of readjusting your seat every time you get in and out of the car; just another detail to provide you with comfort and convenience. Plus, with the available panoramic sunroof, the SEL trims will have you riding in style. For the ultimate experience in comfort, the SEL Premium R-Line offers heated first and second-row seats, along with upgraded Vienna leather and ventilated front seats. At a starting MSRP of $51,625, you can get comfort, luxury, and convenience at an affordable price tag.[a]

  • Technology

The infotainment screen is shown in a 2023 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport SEL Premium R-Line.

It can be hard to imagine a time when our vehicles weren't packed with high-tech gadgets designed to improve our lives. Especially now with features that can do things we once would have thought impossible, at least during the days of cassette tapes and paper maps. So, now that we have left the days of old let's appreciate and explore everything the Atlas offers with each trim package.

    Standard Tech on the SE

Even a base model is more than basic nowadays, as the SE demonstrates using keyless access and push-button starting. The SE trim comes standard with a built-in 6.5-inch touchscreen and App-Connect smartphone integration, meaning you can access some of your most important apps and contacts right from the Atlas. Additionally, the SE trim comes with an 8-inch digital cockpit, which is both an interior accent and a convenient tech display. Add in active blind spot monitor, rear traffic alert, front assist, and an emergency assist for a tech suite designed with safety in mind.

    SE With Technology Features

As the name implies, the SE With Technology trim package is loaded to the top with techy-goodness. The first upgrade is a bump from the 6.5-inch touchscreen to an 8-inch one and an increase in USB-C ports to five total. The cockpit display is also upgraded, featuring the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro configurable digital instrument display, which has been enlarged to 10.25 inches. Keyless access is still standard but paired with a remote engine start as well. Additionally, there is wireless charging and a 3-month trial subscription to SiriusXM. And, of course, additional safety tech is added in the form of adaptive cruise control and Park Distance Control. That's a lot of tech features for a starting MSRP of $38,630.[a]

SEL, SEL R-Line Black, and SEL Premium R-Line Features

All three SEL trim packages offer all the great features from the SE tech package with additional safety tech. dynamic road sign display, high beam control, travel assist, lane assist, and emergency assist are packed into these trims, with the SEL Premium R-Line also including the Fender premium audio system w/ center speaker and subwoofer to round it out. The main differences in the SEL packages will be found on the exterior, along with the engine upgrade, which is standard on the Premium.
