Volkswagen has decided to take its popular midsize liftback sedan and make it even better. The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon is an example of one of the top automakers listening to its customers and improving on a vehicle that is already successful. The key is based on taking an existing platform and combining its two greatest elements. Since its debut here in America in 2019, the Volkswagen Arteon has existed as two vehicles. The standard Volkswagen Arteon is a midsize luxury sedan designed to maximize fuel economy. The Volkswagen Arteon R is a midsize performance sedan with a boosted engine delivering greater acceleration than the standard model.

Unfortunately for Americans, the Volkswagen Arteon was only available here in the standard form, as the Arteon R joined was only available in the European market. For 2022, Volkswagen has decided to combine the two models into a luxury performance liftback sedan for the American market, which will give you the best of both worlds and deliver performance unlike any other Volkswagen you have ever driven. This is because the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon will feature the engine and design previously used on the Arteon R series only.

  • Features

The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon is offered in three different trim levels, continuing the same names as the prior year’s model. The difference is seen in the names, which now prominently feature the R-Line moniker, showing the connection to the European-only Arteon R model. The base model 2022 Volkswagen Arteon SE R-Line rides on 18-inch wheels and offers you front and rear parking sensors with wireless phone charging, both rare standard features on a base model midsize sedan. The Arteon SE R-Line comes standard with front-wheel drive.

    Premium Options

The 2022 SEL R-Line has standard Volkswagen 4Motion all-wheel drive and rides on 20-inch wheels. It also includes a panoramic sunroof for added luxury. The top trim 2022 Volkswagen Arteon SEL Premium R-Line features a Harman Kardon premium sound system as well as other luxury features, making it the ultimate combination of luxury and performance among the three Arteon models. Like the Arteon SEL R-Line, the Arteon SEL Premium R-Line has standard 4Motion all-wheel drive.

  • Performance

A red 2022 Volkswagen Arteon SE is shown from the side driving on an open road.

Just like prior years, the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon will come equipped with a 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged 4-cylinder gas engine. However, Volkswagen has seen fit to improve the performance of this standard engine. The engine on the 2021 model produces 268 horsepower and generates 258 pound-feet of torque. The 2022 Arteon’s turbocharged 4-cylinder engine now produces 300 horsepower while generating 295 pound-feet of torque. This represents an increase of 32 horsepower and 37 pound-feet of torque, giving you improved performance for this car.

In addition to a more powerful engine, the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon comes equipped with a standard 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. This will help you get better takeoff from a standing stop than the 8-speed automatic transmission featured on prior model years of the Arteon. Moreover, the 7-speeds on the dual-clutch transmission are just as efficient as the 8-speeds on the automatic transmission. Finally, a dual-clutch transmission gives you greater control over engine performance than an automatic transmission. It is like having all the benefits of a manual without having to use your left foot to work a clutch.

One of the first things you are going to notice about the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon is its speed. This is one seriously fast sedan. With an engine like the one on the Volkswagen Arteon R, the 2022 model should have no problem matching that car’s speed and acceleration. The Arteon R can go from 0 to 60 mph in around 5 seconds. This is much faster than the numbers for the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon, which can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in roughly 6.4 seconds. Not only does the greater torque and horsepower in the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon provide it with better overall speed and acceleration than prior models, but the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission also does a better job of efficiently transferring that torque to your wheels, giving you an exceptional takeoff from a standing stop.

The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon carries on this model’s tradition for exceptional handling. The DCC adaptive chassis control helps you adjust the adaptive dampers on the suspension to create the ride you are looking for between Normal, Comfort, and Sport modes. The Arteon also features an electronic differential lock, known as the XDS Cross Differential System. This improves the traction and handling of the 2022 Arteon by lightly applying the brakes to the inside wheels when cornering in your car. As a result, you will find that the Arteon holds tight to the road without slippage. Finally, the Arteon SEL R-Line and SEL R-Line Premium come with standard 4Motion all-wheel drive. This will give you exceptional traction, especially in inclement weather.

  • Safety

Volkswagen has made safety a priority on all of its vehicles, and the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon is no exception. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the 2021 Arteon a top safety pick among midsize sedans, showing that it provides excellent protection in front-end, rear-end, and rollover collisions. Furthermore, Volkswagen has provided the 2022 Arteon with a great number of standard active safety features, all part of Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE platform, which consists of 7 different processes.

    Valuable Driver-Assist Features

One problem that often confronts drivers is drifting from their lane. The Lane Assist System will alert you if you start to drift into another lane without first signaling. If you don’t heed the warning, Lane Assist will then use a series of slight adjustments on the steering wheel to get your Arteon back on the straight and narrow.

Active Side Assist uses a blind spot monitor to make changing lanes safer than ever. When you signal to change lanes, Active Side Assist will engage to alert you if there is another vehicle driving in your Arteon’s blind spot. It will also use counter-steering to prevent you from changing lanes when it detects another vehicle in your blind spot. This will reduce the chances of a crash.

Every 2022 Arteon comes with a rearview camera to better help you back out of a parking space safely. However, sometimes there are other vehicles or pedestrians that may be outside of the range of your rearview camera. This is where Rear Traffic Alert comes in handy. The Rear Traffic Alert will detect vehicles or pedestrians that may be about to cross the path of your Arteon and will alert you if this occurs. It can even help engage your brakes to avoid a collision.

The Arteon Helps Keep You Safe

Front Assist consists of three different safety features. First, Forward Collision Warning monitors traffic in front of your Arteon, alerting you if you are driving too close to the car in front of you. If this happens, it will sound a warning for you to apply the brakes to avoid a crash. Front Assist may also engage the Autonomous Emergency Braking to either increase the pressure you are placing on the brakes or apply the brakes independently if you aren’t stepping on the brake pedal already. Finally, Pedestrian Monitoring is a special feature of Front Assist that is designed to detect pedestrians crossing in front of your Arteon. When this happens, the alarm will sound, and if necessary, Front Assist will automatically engage the Arteon’s brakes.

One problem many drivers encounter when using cruise control is the need to adjust their speed or brake their car if a slower vehicle moves into their lane. Adaptive Cruise Control addresses this problem by maintaining a preset distance from the car in front of you, no matter its speed. Once the slower moving car exits your lane, the system will bring your Arteon’s speed back up to the preset level if it is safe to do so.

The final two features of IQ.DRIVE are not standard on all 2022 Arteon models but nevertheless offer some unique things that you might want to consider for your Volkswagen. Emergency Assist helps determine if you are no longer operating your Arteon by monitoring your steering activity. If this occurs, the system will give you numerous alerts and, if there is no response, safely bring your car to a stop. Travel Assist is a form of hands-on self-driving. This system supports you with steering, acceleration, and braking within your lane as long as you keep your hands on the Arteon’s steering wheel.

With all of these exceptional safety features, it truly is no wonder why the IIHS awarded the Volkswagen Arteon as a Top Safety Pick.
