Across the auto industry, it has become clear that Electric Vehicles (EVs) are the future of technology and of the cars that we love. Not to be outdone by other brands, Volkswagen has shown a bold, new entry into the EV market with the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle, an all-electric compact SUV that demonstrates what the future of VW is going to look like. The ID.4 Electric Vehicle is definitely something special, with unique styling inside and out, which immediately catches the eye and showcases a sleek and bold aesthetic that we have been missing with a lot of other brands in the industry.

Since this is a brand-new model, we still have more to learn about it, but what we already know is plenty to ensure that we are excited about everything it has to offer. For starters, there is an all-electric design that includes a rear motor with plenty of power and performance to get the job done. It has a range of up to 250 miles on a full charge and delivers instant torque to put you back in your seat and deliver a truly fun and exhilarating driving experience. Although this rear-wheel drive model is the only one available at launch, we know that Volkswagen is working on an all-wheel drive model with two motors for future release.

Inside the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle, you will find a luxurious interior that stays true to the heritage and sophistication of VW design. While other brands are making their interiors sparser, perhaps to such a degree that they can feel cold, the inside of the ID.4 Electric Vehicle is warm and inviting. It features a 10-inch Infotainment display, with a 12-inch option available and available 12-way power-adjustable front seats that include massage and memory features.

  • Performance

    Motor and Performance

With a conventional vehicle, you would look at its engine and the kind of performance it has to offer. EV models like the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle are not much different, though they have a battery power supply and an electric motor rather than an internal combustion engine. That being said, you still want to see what kind of power and performance it has to offer, and in this case, the ID.4 Electric Vehicle comes through nicely.

The current model of the ID.4 Electric Vehicle features a single motor on the rear axle, which makes it a rear-wheel drive system. This motor delivers up to 201 hp and up to 229 lb-ft of torque, which is delivered instantly, so you really feel all of this performance when you are behind the wheel. The ID.4 Electric Vehicle features regenerative driving to boost overall efficiency, but it does not have a one-pedal driving system like some other models do. Instead, it drives much more like a conventional vehicle that you are used to, but with terrific performance.

Although this single-motor version is all that will be available in the US at launch, we know that Volkswagen is developing a dual-motor model. This will offer all-wheel drive with one motor in the front and one in the rear, delivering up to an estimated 302 hp for improved performance. We probably will not see this one until sometime next year, however, so unless you want to wait, the power and thrill of the single-motor model is plenty of fun to drive.

  • EV Tech

    Charging and Range

Just like the fuel efficiency of a conventional vehicle, the charging ability and range of an EV model are very important. This is one thing that has deterred some people from jumping into the electric market, but with each passing year, the technology is improving. The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle has a terrific range and is easy to charge, so you have the freedom to go where you want and enjoy the road.

With a full charge, the ID.4 Electric Vehicle gets up to an estimated 250 miles of total range, which makes it a great option for long road trips and other occasions. Charging the ID.4 Electric Vehicle is simple since it supports both L1 charging by plugging the provided power cable into a home outlet, as well as L2 charging through an installed at-home charger. Although an L2 charger can be a bit of a commitment, if you are interested in really getting the most out of your 2021 Volkswagen ID.4, then it is well worth the investment.

Fortunately, the ID.4 Electric Vehicle also supports DC Fast Charging technology, which is quick and very efficient for getting the most range from your vehicle. There are more than 17,000 public charging stations throughout the country, with more being added all the time, so it is easy to find a spot to charge up your vehicle. You get three years of unlimited charging at Electrify America DC Fast Chargers at no cost with the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle, which can get 60 miles of range in about 10 minutes at such a charger or go from about 5% to 80% charge in less than 40 minutes through a Fast Charger.

  • Interior

    A Sleek Interior

The interiors of the latest EV models are often quite different from what you find in conventional vehicles. In many cases, companies include the latest technology and features inside them, which makes sense. But there is also a growing trend to take an aggressively minimalist approach, and the result is an interior that can feel sparse and cold, even empty in some ways.

With the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle, you get an interior that is streamlined and sleek without losing any of the comfort or warmth that you want in a vehicle’s cabin. The moment you get inside the ID.4 Electric Vehicle with your key fob and sit down, the vehicle starts automatically as it recognizes you and becomes immediately ready for the road. Cloth seats are standard, but there is available faux-leather seating that is 12-way power-adjustable and includes a massage function.

A 10-inch infotainment display is standard, though a 12-inch screen is available, and this includes controls for navigation, climate control, and more. You get support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, as well as a wireless charging pad for compatible devices. There is a 5-inch reconfigurable digital driver display with voice recognition, but the ID.4 Electric Vehicle can communicate with you in another way. The ID. Light is a light bar that runs across the dashboard and uses glowing visual and acoustic signs to indicate incoming calls, deliver safety warnings, and alert you about your vehicle’s charge status.

  • Safety

Nothing is more important than the safety features of any vehicle you are interested in. No amount of power or luxurious interior options matter if a car or SUV cannot help keep you safe on the road. The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle has a number of fantastic safety features and systems to help protect you and assist you with your driving.

    IQ.DRIVE

The IQ.DRIVE package of safety features includes a Lane Keeping System and Lane Assist that can detect when you are drifting into another lane without using your signal, which will help keep you centered in your current lane. Front Assist features include a Forward Collision Warning, with Autonomous Emergency Braking to help reduce your speed or stop you if a possible collision is detected. There is also a Pedestrian Monitoring feature that warns you when pedestrians are crossing in front of the vehicle, and it can brake automatically to avoid a collision.

Adaptive Cruise Control helps you maintain a preset speed and distance from other vehicles, adjusting speed both up and down to help you stay safe. There is a Blind Spot Monitor that can warn you when a vehicle is in your blind spot, with Lane Assist to help keep you in your lane if a vehicle is detected. The Travel Assist system is a hands-on semi-autonomous driving assistant that can help with steering, accelerating, and braking to make your daily commute or running errands a lot easier. All of these systems come together to make the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle one of the safest vehicles on the road.
