When you are shopping for a vehicle, you have so many options available to you that trying to look at them all will quickly get overwhelming. We like to consider just one or two models at a time to see what they offer and compare their features and options––this makes things a lot more manageable. Considering the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle vs 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, for example, is a great way to see what two of the most popular all-electric compact SUVs on the market have to offer. While the Hyundai model does have some impressive options, the excellent performance and features of the Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle put it ahead.

These are both Electric Vehicles (EVs), which means you need to consider the kind of range they can offer and the powertrain setups they have available. Both models start with rear-wheel drive (RWD) standard, featuring a single motor on the rear axle, but also have all-wheel drive (AWD) available if you want––this gives you a motor on each axle. Depending on your choice of battery and motor configuration, you will get different amounts of range from both models, but the VW comes out on top with a superior standard range. The ID.4 Electric Vehicle with RWD gets an EPA estimated 275 miles of range from a full charge, while the standard battery on the Ioniq 5 can only go an estimated 220 miles from a full charge.[b]

Since these are both compact SUVs, they provide a nimble driving experience while giving you a very functional interior. Inside the VW ID.4 Electric Vehicle, you get more than 64 cu.ft. of cargo space, while the Hyundai model has just over 59 cu.ft. of space on offer––this makes it a lot easier to fit everything you need into the Volkswagen SUV. On top of that, the ID.4 Electric Vehicle also gives you 2,700 lbs of towing capacity to take advantage of, while the Hyundai model can only provide 1,650 lbs of towing. Plus, the impressive performance and bold functionality come with a stylish interior that includes an available 12-inch infotainment display and a standard ID. Light that provides you with visual cues through a light bar across the front dashboard.

  • Range and Charging

    Battery Options and Range

When looking at EV models, you always want to consider the sort of performance, range, and charging functionality they offer. While EV range is somewhat comparable to the fuel economy of conventional vehicles, in some ways, it can be even more important. After all, there is no shortage of gas stations across the country, but charging stations can still be tricky to find in some areas. The situation is getting better, but until EV charging stations are as numerous as gas stations, you should strongly consider the kind of range an EV has.

The VW ID.4 Electric Vehicle has a single battery size available, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has two different battery options: a Standard Range and a Long Range battery. You might think this is an advantage for the Hyundai, but it just means you have to pay more for an Ioniq 5 to match what the ID.4 Electric Vehicle offers standard. Consider this: the range for the Hyundai model with its Standard Range battery is an estimated 220 miles from a full charge––by comparison, the ID.4 Electric Vehicle with its standard battery and RWD gets an EPA estimated 275 miles of range from a full charge.[b] That is a massive difference that will matter if you are using your vehicle for a long road trip or simply want to drive an extra day or two without worrying about recharging.

    Available All-Wheel Drive

For both models, switching to AWD boosts performance thanks to the second motor, but it will cost you a bit of range. The ID.4 Electric Vehicle gets an EPA estimated 251 miles of range with AWD and its standard trim, but you cannot get AWD on an Ioniq 5 with its Standard Range battery.[b] This means you have to pay more and get the Long Range battery on the Hyundai model if you want AWD. And even though you are paying a lot more at that point, you still only get 256 miles of estimated range––nearly the same as the VW model.

  • Interior Space and Functionality

    Functional Space

With any kind of SUV, you want to make sure you choose a model that will give you plenty of functional space to utilize for daily driving, long road trips, and anything else you might plan. A compact SUV is the perfect way to enjoy a functional and well-designed interior while still having a vehicle that is not so large that it takes over your life. Both the Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle and Hyundai Ioniq 5 are compact SUVs, but they have been designed with different amounts of space inside that can be utilized in various ways.

Sometimes the difference between two similar models can be pretty minimal, especially when you are looking at specs and stats where manufacturers like to brag. One brand might design their truck to be able to tow 10 lbs more than any other model so they can advertise they have the strongest pickup, but no one will ever really notice that tiny difference. With these two models, however, the difference is quite significant and can really matter if you like to be able to load up your vehicle and hit the road. The 2022 Ioniq 5 has just over 27 cu.ft. of cargo space in the rear of the vehicle and offers just over 59 cu.ft. of total cargo volume behind the front seats. There is a front trunk, or frunk, which provides a bit more room, but this ends up being less than 1 cu.ft. of additional space.

The ID.4 Electric Vehicle Offers More

With the 2022 VW ID.4 Electric Vehicle, you get more than 30 cu.ft. of cargo space in the rear of the vehicle, which is substantially more than the Hyundai. If you like to be able to load up the back of your SUV with a lot of stuff, then this definitely makes a difference. Similarly, the ID.4 Electric Vehicle has more than 64 cu.ft. of total cargo space behind the front row, which gives you a lot more room to pile in suitcases, shopping bags, or camping supplies for a weekend away. Not only do you get more room inside the ID.4 Electric Vehicle, but it can also tow up to 2,700 lbs of weight behind it, half a ton more than the 1,650 lb limit of the Ioniq 5, which gives you more functionality.

  • Technology Features

    Hyundai vs Volkswagen Technology

Nowadays, the technology found in vehicles is as important as anything else since so much of your interaction with your SUV is based on the kind of tech features it has. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 features a 12.3-inch infotainment display, a similar digital instrument cluster, and multiple USB ports up front. Available features on the Ioniq 5 include a Bose premium audio system, wireless charger, and ambient cabin lighting. Overall, the tech features on the Ioniq 5 are nice but nothing special, and in that way, they fall short of what the Volkswagen model comes with.

Although the VW ID.4 Electric Vehicle comes with a 10-inch infotainment display standard, an available 12-inch screen takes technology to the next level. It also has a digital gauge cluster, heated steering wheel, and heated front seats. A wireless charging pad is standard on every ID.4 Electric Vehicle model, while it is only available on some Ioniq 5 models, plus you get the innovative ID. Light on all ID.4 Electric Vehicle models. The ID. Light is a light bar that runs across the dashboard and provides you with information about incoming phone calls, safety alerts, and the status of your vehicle while charging. Plus, the ID.4 Electric Vehicle Intuitive Start system senses when you have your key fob on you and automatically wakes up when you sit in the driver’s seat.
