Your four options at lease end

Volkswagen Financial Services lists four ways to finish a lease (VW). Your own lease agreement sets the exact fees and limits.

Option 1

Turn it in for another Volkswagen

VW waives the turn-in fee when you lease or purchase a new or Certified Pre-Owned Volkswagen through Volkswagen Financial Services within the window it sets after your return, subject to its credit review. A loyalty bonus may also apply on select new models, though not on the ID.4.

Option 2

Buy your Volkswagen

You can buy the car at any point in the lease by requesting a payoff quote in your VW Financial Services account, and a security deposit is applied to the payoff (VW FAQ). VW's current lease offers list a $395 fee when you purchase the vehicle; your contract shows yours.

Option 3

Extend the lease

VW Financial Services can extend a lease three months past its end date, or up to six on select models, and raises the mileage allowance in proportion. Not every lessee qualifies, so send VW a message through your account to ask.

Option 4

Return it and walk away

Set up a turn-in with a Volkswagen dealer. The final invoice arrives in about four to six weeks. If your next car did not go through VW Financial Services, it includes the turn-in fee, which VW says covers cleaning and reconditioning.

VW's turn-in process, step by step

  1. Watch the mailAbout 90 days before the lease ends, VW Financial Services mails its wear and use guidelines with a small measuring tool for dings, interior damage and tread depth.
  2. Book the free inspectionVW accepts inspections only from AiM, a third-party company that can meet you at home, at work or at a dealership. The report is good for 90 days as long as no new damage happens.
  3. Decide on repairsDamage on the report can be fixed at a Volkswagen Authorized Collision Repair Facility, with receipts emailed to VW before turn-in. You can't repair those items yourself, and anything left unrepaired is billed on the final invoice.
  4. Clear lights and open workVW counts lit service lights, unfinished warranty repairs and skipped scheduled maintenance as excess wear and use. Book service a few weeks ahead so our technicians can take care of them.
  5. Turn it inBring every key, the owner's manual and maintenance booklet, the headrests and any cargo cover, and keep a copy of the Vehicle Turn-In Form.

Auburn driving and your lease

Commuting on SR 167 or SR 18 adds miles fast. VW's current 36-month offers set a 30,000-mile limit and charge $0.20 for each mile over it, so compare the odometer with your contract a year before the end. VW Financial Services gives eligible lessees a chance to buy extra miles at the halfway point of the lease.

Winter is the other trap. If trips over Snoqualmie Pass mean a set of snow tires, put tires matching the original spec back on before the inspection, because VW lists snow tires as excess wear. On a 4MOTION Volkswagen, all four tires have to match in brand, size and rating, and our tire shop can set you up with a matching set.

Trading your leased VW at Bud Clary

Your lease may be worth more than its payoff. We appraise it like any other trade, and when you trade it toward another vehicle we handle the payoff with the leasing company. When the appraisal beats the payoff, that difference becomes credit toward whatever you drive next.

Shopping the next one? Compare VW lease deals and new vehicle specials, or look at a Certified Pre-Owned Volkswagen, which VW also counts toward the turn-in fee waiver. A negotiable documentary service fee of up to $200 may be added to the sale price or capitalized cost of your next vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Can you trade in a VW lease?

Yes. Turning your leased Volkswagen in for a new one is one of the four lease-end options VW Financial Services lists, along with buying it, extending it and returning it. We appraise it, and if it is worth more than the payoff, the difference can go toward your next vehicle.

Can I return my VW lease to a different dealership?

The dealer where you leased the car is required to take it back. Other Volkswagen dealers may accept it, but VW Financial Services says to contact them first. If you leased somewhere else and want to return it here, call us before you come in.

Can a third party buy out my Volkswagen lease?

VW Financial Services lets you buy the car yourself at any time with a payoff quote, but its FAQ says it cannot release the title in the name of a third party. Trading the lease in with us is the other route to compare.

Can I turn in my VW lease early?

You can ask, but VW Financial Services may charge a fee to end a lease early, and the earlier you end it, the larger that charge is likely to be. Get a trade appraisal first so you can compare.

How does the VW lease-end inspection work?

It is free and done by AiM, the only inspector VW accepts, at your home, your office or a dealership. The report stays valid for 90 days if no new damage occurs.

What does VW charge at the end of a lease?

The final invoice can include excess wear and use, excess mileage, the turn-in fee, unpaid payments or taxes, and late fees. VW's current offers list a $395 disposition fee and $0.20 a mile over 30,000 miles on 36-month terms, but your own contract governs.
