What a DSG service does
A DSG, or direct-shift gearbox, uses two clutches: one for the odd gears and one for the even gears. That's why it can have the next gear ready and shift so quickly.
The transmission fluid cools those clutches, lubricates the gears and supplies the pressure behind every shift. A DSG service replaces the fluid and the filter the way Volkswagen specifies for your model.

Why Volkswagen recommends it: A DSG shifts with two clutches, and its fluid does a lot of the work: it cools the clutches, lubricates the gears and carries the pressure behind every shift. That fluid wears out, so Volkswagen schedules fresh fluid and a new filter, usually every 40,000 miles.
Why we recommend it: We do it to protect the transmission and make it last a long time. The DSG is a big part of what makes a GTI or Golf R fun to drive, and a fluid service costs a lot less than a transmission repair.
What happens if you skip it: Worn-out fluid is hard on the clutches and on the unit that controls the shifts. The first signs are usually a shudder pulling away from a stop or a slow, rough shift, and by then the fix can cost far more than the service would have.
