The largest model in the Volkswagen lineup, the three-row Atlas, is the perfect option if you are looking for a spacious and comfortable SUV for a growing family. Although it received a facelift not long ago for the 2021 model year, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas has been thoroughly updated once again with fantastic new features and options inside and out. While this does not mark the launch of a new generation for the Atlas, it is not far from it, as VW has given this SUV a tremendous amount of attention. As a result, one of our favorite Volkswagen models has become better than ever.

For starters, the two engines available in previous years for the Atlas have been replaced by a single option, creating a streamlined experience that makes it easier to pick the perfect vehicle. You get a 2.0L twin-turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers 269 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. This makes getting behind the wheel of the Atlas something you will look forward to. Plus, you can get this performance with either Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) or All-Wheel Drive (AWD), matching this power with the traction and control you need.

The exterior of the 2024 VW Atlas has received a gorgeous facelift and overhaul from front to back, including new C-shaped headlamps and an updated chrome four-bar grille. Most models come with an illuminated VW logo on the front for an added touch of style, along with full-width tail lights on the rear. Inside the 2024 Atlas, you will find a host of updates and improvements, making for a more luxurious and sophisticated driving experience. Standard features inside include a 12.0-inch infotainment display and a 10.3-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display, while new lighting options and a head-up display are available to elevate your Atlas to the next level.

It is easy to overlook the importance of a good engine in an SUV since they are not as heavily advertised as the powertrains in sports cars and full-size trucks. And yet, the engine is just as important in something like the VW Atlas as it is in any other vehicle out there; in fact, given the robust size of the Atlas, it could be argued that it is more important than with a lot of smaller crossover and SUV models. In previous years, Volkswagen offered two engines for drivers to choose from—and while both were great choices, one was clearly better than the other. With the 2024 update for the Atlas, VW has simplified things and delivered a single, powerful engine.

Options for engines are great, but they are usually resigned to a decent starting powertrain and a superior available option. With the 2024 Atlas, Volkswagen has kept things simple with just one: a 2.0L twin-turbocharged four-cylinder beauty that delivers a solid 269 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. By comparison, the starting engine on the 2023 model is a 235 hp four-cylinder, so you can see VW has really boosted performance with this new engine. You get an eight-speed automatic transmission with this new standard engine, providing a smooth and responsive driving experience to go along with all that power.

Not only do you get a powerful engine that delivers an enthusiastic level of performance designed to ensure you have a good time whenever you get behind the wheel, but you can also choose between FWD and AWD. While FWD certainly works for a lot of drivers, we definitely prefer the improved traction and overall control that AWD delivers. This is particularly vital if you want to take your VW Atlas onto dirt and gravel roads, making this the perfect choice for family camping trips. An Atlas with AWD is also terrific for staying safe and in control when the weather gets rough, giving you excellent traction even amid rain, snow, and slush.

The exterior design and style of your SUV might not be the most important thing as you initially peruse your options, but it really does make a difference. When you buy a new vehicle, it should be something you look forward to getting into every day. That comes down to the driving experience and the interior, of course, and yet the exterior has just as much influence. There is nothing quite like stepping outside and seeing a gorgeous piece of machinery waiting for you, inviting you on a drive.

For the 2024 update, the VW Atlas has had a number of major exterior updates and an overall facelift that makes it look better than ever. We had a hard time imagining how it could look any better since the Atlas recently received an update for the 2021 model year, and yet the designers at Volkswagen delivered a gorgeous new look. This update includes a chrome four-bar grille with a bold and stunning look—without becoming overbearing—along with C-shaped headlamps, and most models come with an illuminated VW logo on the front. There is also a newly available light bar running along the top of the grille, which meets the headlamps on either end, creating an illuminated signature that is strong and stylish.

You will find stunning new wheel designs on the updated 2024 Atlas, which are available in a range of sizes from 18 to 21 in., creating a strong and powerful stance. New, full-length taillights on the rear of the Atlas continue the overall look of this updated SUV to create a comprehensive lighting style from front to back. Overall, the new Atlas looks gorgeous, and additional design touches like a larger rear spoiler help to complete the sporty and energetic aesthetic that VW has given our favorite seven-passenger SUV.

One look is all it takes to see a lot of the major updates for the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas since its gorgeous exterior facelift; to really discover how much work VW has put into this update, however, you need to get inside it. The Atlas was already a captivating piece of machinery with a comfortable and spacious interior, and yet Volkswagen has found a way to go even further with this model. They have improved just about every inch of the interior with rich new materials, innovative technology, and one of the best overall designs we could ask for. If you want a three-row SUV that is perfect for you and your family, this is the one to look at.

From the moment you first sit down inside the 2024 Atlas, you will immediately see the level of care and attention the VW design team has put into it. The dash and front center console feature leatherette upholstery, soft-touch materials throughout the interior, and optional wood details to add extra luxury. You will find the same spacious interior we have enjoyed from the Atlas for the past few years, on top of three rows of seating, but what really sets the Atlas apart is that all three rows have ample space, allowing seven passengers—including adults—to stretch their legs and get comfortable.

Two of the most striking additions for the 2024 Atlas are found upfront: a standard 12-inch floating infotainment display paired with a 10.3-inch fully configurable Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro display for the driver. Wireless app connectivity is standard, along with up to eight USB-C ports for charging and connectivity—plus, you get a wireless charging pad for compatible devices. You will find new features like Climatronic automatic climate control with Voice Control and fantastic standard features such as a heated steering wheel and ventilated front seats. Add available options like heated rear seats and leather seating surfaces, and everything comes together to create a fantastic driving experience.
