A Look at the History of the Volkswagen Jetta

In the 1970s, the Volkswagen Golf found great success throughout North America but felt that its hatchback design failed to draw in potential customers looking for more of a traditional sedan. They did not want to change the Golf and alienate those customers who liked its design, so they set about creating a new option that would create greater opportunities to meet the needs of a wide range of customers. The simplest solution to this problem was the one they chose: putting a large trunk onto the rear of the Golf to create a new sedan designed to appeal to those interested in Volkswagen but not a hatchback.

Although some claim that the name “Jetta” was based on the Atlantic “jet stream” air current, this is somewhat debated. Some VW models do have names related to the wind in one way or another; the word “Passat” in German can refer to a trade wind but is also a type of sailing ship. “Bora” and “Scirocco” are both models with names based on winds, but it's possible that the name “Jetta” was inspired by the jet stream or jetliner airplanes, or perhaps both. In fact, a former Volkswagen advertising copywriter looked into it and could find no sign that there was ever a specific theme intended for the names of their vehicles. Regardless of origin, the Volkswagen Jetta has been a familiar option here in the US ever since it was first introduced.

The first generation of the Jetta ran from 1980 through 1984, then a second generation (based on the second-generation Golf model) launched for the 1985 model year. The first and second-generation models were quite popular in Europe and North America and were available as two-door or four-door sedans. The second generation ran through the 1991 model year, but due to production delays, the third generation did not launch until the 1993 model year. This model was renamed the “Vento” in Europe but remained the Jetta here in North America because it had proven to be a very popular option.

A fourth generation for the Jetta launched with the 2000 model year, featuring a redesign that included styling inspired by the larger VW Passat and with numerous updates throughout. This was followed by a fifth generation starting with the 2005 model year. By this point, the Jetta had proven so popular here that Volkswagen invested $800 million in upgrading their production facilities in Mexico to make even more of them. For its sixth generation and the 2010 model year, it truly became its own vehicle; while it still shared a platform with the Golf, it now featured dedicated bodywork rather than simply being an altered version of the Golf.

The seventh generation of the Jetta kicked off with the 2019 model year and a fully redesigned sedan that remains an incredibly popular option. Based on a new platform shared by other VW models, such as the Golf and Atlas, the redesigned model became larger than the previous generation and received numerous upgrades inside and out. While it has been discontinued in Europe, it remains incredibly popular in North America and has found new fans in other markets like Korea and China.
